Dear Washington and Lee University,
We are home to many traditions, from the honor system to streaking the colonnade, from the speaking tradition to not walking under G-Lees arch until graduation. We are also home to many violences from the slave-owning history of our founders to our continued exclusion of black and brown people, from not allowing women to study at our university to the heteronormative structures of greek organizations.
Our inability to prioritize the needs and experiences of people of color, LGBTQ+ folks, and other minority groups has made racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of hate the norm on campus.
DearWLU provides a safe digital space for faculty, students, staff and alumni to voice their stories and concerns. Exclusivity cannot be our tradition.
